About The Melba

The Melba Theatre has long been a Cobram landmark. Originally opened in the late 1940s, it was a single-screen cinema which seated 450 people. It closed in 1984, and the site was taken over for use as a market, which later fell into disuse. Sue and Robert Gemmell redeveloped the site into a twin-screen cinema, which seats just over 240 people, in the late 1990s.

The Melba reopened on May 8th, 1997, with a gala charity screening of Evita, to raise money for the Cobram Hospital — echoing the gala opening of the original theatre, which was for the same cause. Since then, the theatre has once again become a fixture in Cobram, opening Thursday and Friday evenings, and Saturdays and Sundays from noon — except during school holidays, when the theatre is open seven days a week.

About Cobram

Cobram is an agricultural town located on the Murray River in North-Eastern Victoria. With an area population of about 5,000 people, Cobram is the largest town in the district. Part of the Moira shire, Cobram attracts tourists from all over Australia — and beyond — on the strength of its great weather; fabulous sandy beaches; excellent swimming, golf, and water-skiing; its many tourist attractions; and, of course, its famous fishing spots.

How To Get There

Cobram is about 250km north of Melbourne, on the Murray River, between Tocumwal and Yarrawonga. The Melba Theatre is located at 19 Bank Street, right in the heart of town, opposite the Cobram Disposals camping store and Retravision.
